Tactics is the strategy, the art of knowing what to do and when to do it. Followed by the skill, it is important to spend time mastering how to use it and finally, ensure you have the right gear. You must remember that your gun is a tool, and you are the weapon. Mindset should be our focus, not draw time. Knowing what to do and when to do it are vital skills, but knowing why is the key. Not carrying your gun leaves you susceptible to danger. Opening up your mind will change your point of view on fighting and defending yourself, so there should be no fear about carrying your tool at all times.
Tactical Training Courses
Picking the right tactics program can be a bit difficult because there are so many options out there. Tactical training is broken down into two different groups. Schools and private instruction. People often lean towards the schools because the variety of teachers available. Shooting and combat courses are great for mindset, tactics and skill but most schools focus primarily on skill. These courses are often a crowd favorite among military and police because they have the mindset part under control and just want to tune up their skill. It takes a dedicated and passionate teacher to really open up the minds of his students to understand the importance of mindset.
Tactical based courses get to the nitty gritty details of the movements. The use of covers, communicating with your team and all the strategies to win. Don’t be fooled into thinking these courses are for men only. Husbands and wives do these courses together all the time, and some schools will even offer a “women only” tactical course. The women’s tactical courses are designed to prepare women with defensive skills to avoid and survive attack in a comfortable environment. It is important for everyone to stay aware and be prepared, especially for women in case they are caught in a situation by themselves.
Tactical mindset
We all need to remember to continue to be a student. That is why mindset is so important. There is always room to grow and develop your skills. The easiest way to pick a school is doing a little research and figure out what you want. Do you want to speed up your draw times and split times? Or are you looking to defend your family? Try out different schools because every teacher has their own principles. Explore different ideas and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Just make sure you do this after class because you are the student and not the teacher and you don’t want to piss off the coach.
When researching the schools keep in mind that a good school has a fixed location and multiple instructors. Don’t get fooled by the “schools” run by one teacher and a team of yes men. There are a few schools out there that are known to provide high quality and detailed training, so here are the top three that I have come across.
Gunsite Academy
Gunsite is the OG of training schools. Created by Jim Cooper in 1917, he wanted, “Gunsite to be the vehicle for spreading the Modern Technique of the Pistol.” It has expanded to nine locations across the United States and inspired the base of all the other training schools today. Their techniques may not be the most modern, but they work and have a major focus on Fighting Mindset. Whether a beginner or a professional, Gunsite is a great place to start if you are looking for the skills and strategies to defend your family.
Rogers Shooting School
Rogers Shooting School is located near Ellijay, Georgia. This is not a beginner school and is known to be challenging. Even intermediate shooters will say their skills improved after attending Rogers. Bill Rogers, the chief instructor, carries over 40 years of experience. He is a former FBI Agent, police instructor, and successful inventor. His team of teachers are definitely people you want to learn from. The RSS focuses on one hand shooting, which is uncommon for most schools. They are famous for their disappearing plate rack system that challenges the students to shoot plates under a specific par time in closer range.
InSights Training Center
This training center is located Bellevue, Washington. InSights Training Center is best known for their highly qualified team of instructors and wide range of classes. They provide classes that range from advanced rifle, pistol and shotgun classes, to Defensive Folding Knife courses. They don’t skip out on the details. The instructors at ISTC are masters at making their courses interesting for everyone.
